New Afterschool Programs

It was a busy week at Virginia Outside!  We started out working the Earth Day festival by the 14th Street Bridge.  It was a great time seeing other local businesses out showing kids, parents and the community what they are doing with their programs!
We also began 3 new programs this week as well as continued our Friday St. Christopher's First through Fifth grade program.  Tuckahoe Elementary, Fox Elementary and St. Chris Kindergarteners joined us for new programs this week!  Even though the weather forecast called for thunderstorms and rain Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons turned out just great!

The Tuckahoe group was full speed ahead as soon as we got to the Wetlands!  We hiked, skipped rocks, climbed vines and helped rebuild our driftwood boat that seemed to have been swept away by the roaring river last week.  They had a great time catching caterpillars and frogs as they are all starting to come out now that the weather is perfect!

The Fox group got cut a little short by the rain when they got down to the Wetlands, but still got to hike and help rebuild the driftwood boat a bit!  Once the rain really started to come down we started our hike back to the van hearing lots of squeals and "I'm going to melt" comments.  Nothing like a good afternoon shower to cool you off!

St. Chris Kindergarten was full of energy and excitement and as soon as we got off the bus they were ready to roll!  We hiked, climbed on rocks and then played with some worms, crickets and blue gill.  They also really enjoyed catching minnows!  They had a blast holding everything and chasing the crickets as they would hop out of their hands any chance they got!

On Friday we had our normal group of St. Christopher's first through fifth graders!  Since the shad are going to stop running soon we decided we should get our last trip in to catch some!  We headed down to pipeline with a very enthusiastic group about fishing and exploring.  When we got to pipeline we quickly set up some rods and got right to fishing, while others decided some of us should explore the pipeline a little more.  We set off checking out the river and what had been washed up recently with the high waters!  They found lots of great artifacts and caught tons of shad!

We look forward to a great weekend of Birthday Parties and Fishing!  Check back next week to see what kind of adventures we endured!

Fun with Preschoolers

On Thursday April 21, Virginia Outside went back to preschool and what a trip it was! Emily and Tee put on a fantastic fishing expo for three classes of St. Stephen's Preschool. From hearing the little ones tall tales of fishing...."and there was this one time I caught a baby dolphin!" to the squeals of delight as the kids played with the wiggly worms, there really was never a dull moment.

Catching minnows in a bucket and feeling the bluegill swim between their fingers had the kids chomping at the bit for more.

The program concluded with a casting game and some of those little people could really get it out there!  Thanks to St. Stephen's for allowing us the pleasure!
